Rent today, Buy tomorrow

The South Australian Housing Trust’s new Rent to Buy program is here to provide a path to owning your own home.  A total of 125 homes have been committed as part of the Affordable Housing Initiative (AHI) into dynamic rent-to-buy opportunities.

We believe stable housing is the foundation of a strong future. This program gives everyday working South Australian long-term renters a fair go, offering a secure home now, and a real shot at owning it in the future. The initiative will be open to all eligible purchasers; however, priority will be given to individuals who have been employed long-term and have spent an extended period in the rental market without the opportunity to transition into home ownership.

How it works

• Rent a newly built home at 75% of market rent for up to two years
• Save while you rent
• Buy your home in up to two years at a fixed purchase price (with possibility of a one-year extension)

Eligibility

Criteria for the Rent to Buy program is the same as eligibility criteria for the purchase of a home in the AHI.

All criteria can be found on the ‘am I eligible to buy an affordable home’ page of the HomeSeeker SA website.

You may be eligible if you:

• are aged 18 years or older
• live in South Australia
• are an Australian citizen or hold permanent residency in Australia
• have a steady job and/or are self employed
• have rented for a long time (over two years)
• do not own any real estate property (in or outside of Australia)
• intend to live in the home for a minimum of 6 (six) months from the date of buying and settling the home.
