a paw-some effort
Each year, hundreds of greyhounds leave the racing industry and begin new lives as pets and family members. For many, the change can be overwhelming. Something as simple as a cuddly or squeaky toy of their own - one they can take from foster care to their new home - can make a big difference in helping them settle.
That’s why our animal loving staff once again rallied behind last year’s Greyhound Christmas Appeal Drive, setting a new record. They collected 140 toys, blankets and enrichment items, along with more than 10kg of treats and dry food, to support greyhounds as they adjust to their new lives.
Over the past four years, SA Housing Trust staff have donated more than 400 items, helping countless dogs feel more comfortable and secure during this transition.
Greyhound Racing SA’s Manager, Welfare Compliance & Traceability, Hayley Alexander, expressed her appreciation when the donations were delivered.
“The generosity and support from the Housing Trust team over the past few years has made such a positive impact for the greyhounds at GAP, particularly our dogs in our prison programs, and we are incredibly grateful,” Ms Alexander said.
“The dogs absolutely love the enrichment items, toys and cosy bedding, and it really helps make their transition with us more comfortable.”
