A small team from the SA Housing Trust recently travelled to the Northern Territory to support recovery efforts following severe flooding in March - the worst in decades.
Working from the Emergency Operations Centre in Darwin, the team helped plan and coordinate the safe return of residents to flood-affected remote communities, including Nauiyu (Daly River) and Nganmarriyanga. This included aligning housing readiness, essential services, transport, and welfare support to enable people to return home safely.
At the same time, another team was deployed to Batchelor, where an Emergency Evacuation Centre continues to support displaced residents. There, staff worked alongside Northern Territory Government agencies and partner organisations to assist with day-to-day welfare services and help coordinate return-to-community efforts.
Across both locations, SA Housing Trust staff supported transport coordination, housing allocation, and access to essential household items. They also helped establish temporary health services, schooling, and other critical supports to ensure communities could begin to recover and rebuild.
