Future tradies' graduation

Doorways 2 Construction (D2C) graduating students

Thirty students from the Doorways 2 Construction (D2C) program graduated recently after their hands-on experience refurbishing one of our southern suburbs homes. Students aspiring a career in construction trade had the opportunity to put many of their skills to use including carpentry, tiling, demolition, concreting and painting.

Several students have secured apprenticeships already, an outstanding result for these young people and a tribute to their dedication and hard work.

The D2C program commenced in 2001 in collaboration with the Construction Industry Trading Board (CITB) and secondary schools to train tradespersons of the future.

Cutting power bills for more social housing tenants

Tradespeople installing solar panels on a roof

The Commonwealth and State Governments announced a $500 million expansion of the Social Housing Energy Performance Initiative (SHEPI) program. SHEPI will help save energy bills for more than 100,000 social homes across Australia.

The SHEPI program provides upgrades such as insulation, electrification, and solar installations for eligible households. These upgrades reduce tenant energy usage with a potential ongoing average bill saving of around $1,800 per year.

The program is expected to reach more than 25 percent of Australia’s social housing homes.

SHEPI benefits Australians most at risk of energy hardship and with the least ability to under take energy performance upgrades to their homes.

Kris and his dog Rock playing on the lawn in the park

It’s been a journey for Kris and his bull terrier, Rock. Rock has been the centre of Kris' world for the past eight years and his biggest motivation to end his homelessness.

The last time we met the pair, about 18 months ago, they were at a transitional accommodation run by Carrington Cottages, The Waymouth. Carrington Cottages operates four transitional accommodation sites in the CBD and is supported by the Trust.
