Early access initiative reduces housing wait times
The SA Housing Trust’s Early Access initiative is delivering faster turnaround times for vacant properties, helping more South Australians move into safe, secure housing sooner.
This new approach prioritises essential repairs before tenants move in, with non-urgent maintenance scheduled for after occupancy. All properties must still meet South Australia's minimum housing standards, including safety, cleanliness, and suitability.
“Our commitment to the Trust’s accommodation standards remains unchanged,” said Julie, Senior Manager, Vacancy Program. “We're making sure homes are safe, clean and secure before tenants move in, and getting properties back into use faster.”
As of 20 June 2025, 169 vacant properties have been assessed, with 80 meeting Early Access standards - nearly 50% of all vacancies.
In metro areas, properties returned under Early Access are now averaging 7.5 days, a significant improvement in vacancy turnaround time. Regional locations including Ceduna, Port Lincoln and Port Augusta have also begun implementing the approach.
This streamlined model is reducing pressure on the social housing system, with hundreds of people expected to benefit as Early Access makes a measurable difference by returning homes to the system more quickly without compromising safety or standards.
48 new homes announced for Camden Park

48 modern public housing units are coming to Camden Park in the western suburbs.
The project will replace previous SA Housing Trust units that were no longer fit for purpose and will form a part of the broader renewal of the suburb.
Upon expected completion in 2027, future residents will have access to ample green space as well as public transport options. Importantly, after listening to community feedback, additional parking spaces are being added to allow parking for each unit, as well as guests.
With plans now approved, construction can get underway as soon as a builder is selected.
Building affordable homes with Fairmont
The Affordable Housing Initiative (AHI) is increasing the supply and availability of affordable homes, providing new pathways for South Australians to achieve their housing goals.
SA Housing Trust is proud to engage experienced builders like Fairmont Homes, who deliver high-quality, modern housing. All AHI homes are fixed-price, available only to eligible buyers (so no competition from investors) with a range of financing options available.
The above video highlights Fairmont Homes' commitment to building quality, modern homes as part of the AHI. Their focus on contemporary design and high construction standards demonstrates how the Trust ensures South Australians can access affordable homes without compromising on quality.
Through the AHI, the Trust is set to deliver 1,000 new affordable homes for sale, making home ownership more achievable than ever before.
Currently, the Trust's Blakeview development on Bentley Road offers 60 new 2-3 bedroom homes at fixed prices.
These projects not only help future homeowners but also ease pressure on the broader housing system, freeing up private rentals and low-income housing for those most in need.
Beryl recognised for 30 years of giving back
Beryl Dickinson, one of our tenants from Northern Adelaide, has been honoured for 30 years of volunteer work at Modbury Hospital.
Her journey began after an illness left her seeking purpose and motivation, and she's since served across various departments, now guiding patients and visitors.
“You never know what someone’s coming in for,” Beryl says. “If I can calm them down and give them a bit of comfort, that’s what gives me the most joy.”
Volunteering became even more essential after her husband's passing, providing a positive outlet at a tough time. Beryl finds immense joy in comforting others, considering Modbury Hospital her “second home.”
Among her many memories, a special connection with a seriously ill child in the former Children’s Ward stands out. “She just wouldn't let me go. I'll always remember her. I provided comfort to her… those types of connections are why I love what I do.”
Now proudly wearing her Modbury Hospital lifetime service badge, Beryl encourages others to get involved. “If you’re thinking about volunteering, do it! It’s just the best,” she says. “I’ll keep coming back until they tell me I can’t anymore!”

Celebrating NAIDOC week
SA Housing Trust staff actively participated in NAIDOC Week, which this year marked a significant milestone: 50 years of celebrating and elevating Indigenous voices, culture, and resilience.
The 2025 theme, "The Next Generation: Strength, Vision and Legacy," honoured past achievements while looking to a bright future empowered by young leaders, community vision, and ancestral legacy.
A key highlight for staff was the NAIDOC March and Family Festival at Tarntanyangga (Victoria Square). The march proceeded from Victoria Square to Parliament House, and the Trust hosted a stall at the festival, offering resources and engaging with the community.
