Construction has officially begun on Wirra Mikangka, a landmark housing development in Eastwood, marking another step forward in delivering more homes for South Australians.
This milestone comes as Adelaide smashes its own crane record for the second consecutive count, with 29 cranes now shaping the city skyline - including a newly-erected crane at the Wirra Mikangka site on Greenhill Rd.
The project replaces 29 outdated Trust flats with two modern housing towers on the edge of the Adelaide parklands. It will deliver 151 contemporary one, two and three-bedroom apartments, significantly increasing housing supply through a partnership with Housing Choices South Australia.
A total of 121 homes will be allocated for people on low and moderate incomes, including applicants on the single housing register. All apartments meet accessibility standards, with eight specifically designed for wheelchair users, and the buildings will achieve high energy‑efficiency standards.
A shared landscaped courtyard will connect both towers, creating greenspace that supports connection and community.
Wirra Mikangka, meaning 'in front of the forest', will be completed next year and will be managed by Housing Choices Australia.
The project showcases how partnerships can deliver inclusive, accessible housing while supporting vibrant, diverse communities.
